Founded in 1910 KFUM-Spejderne i Danmark stands as a testament to scouting’s enduring appeal. It began as a small group of young men. They were inspired by the scouting movement. They met in a building on Gothersgade in Copenhagen. Their founder was the machine master Jens Grane. He had help from Jens Engberg and Henrik Galle. A week after their first meeting four patrols were established. They had 28 boys. A week later there were six patrols and around 50 boys. Initially young adults led these patrols. The principle of children leading children under adult supervision was soon adopted.
KFUM-Spejderne initially consisted solely of boys. This changed in 1972. The first units with both girls and boys were approved. By 1982 the entire organization opened its doors to both genders. KFUM originally stood for Kristlig Forening for Unge Mænd meaning Christian Association for Young Men. This was later changed to Kristlig Forening for Unge Mennesker Christian Association for Young People.
The organization’s motto is Vær Beredt Be Both meaning Be Prepared Be Both. This reflects its dedication to developing well-rounded individuals. KFUM-Spejderne played a significant role in Danish society. It instilled values such as self-reliance responsibility and democratic participation. The first KFUM-Spejderne scout camp took place in 1916. It had 126 participants out of 504 members. The organization has grown significantly since then. Today it boasts over 24000 members across Denmark. It remains the second-largest scouting federation in Denmark. It’s only surpassed by Det Danske Spejderkorps.
