“Lost materials” could well be the motto of the Keresztel\u0151 Szent J\u00e1nos templom. This house of worship has a history marked by grand ambitions. These ambitions were ultimately curtailed by war and circumstance.
Let’s delve into the story of this church. The Keresztel\u0151 Szent J\u00e1nos templom stands as a testament to faith and perseverance in Budapest.
In the late 1920s, Istv\u00e1n Szel\u00e9nyi established a place for mass in a house on F\u00fcrj Street. Later in 1929, the Cs\u00f6rsz Street Chapel Association was founded. Believers regularly attended services in various locations. These included the V\u00f6r\u00f6skereszt Hospital and the chapel of the N\u00e9metv\u00f6lgyi \u00fati Hadirokkant Otthon.
In 1940, the Fels\u0151krisztinav\u00e1ros parish was established. That same year, architect Ferenc Fiala designed a church. It was intended to become a cultural center after a larger church was built.
Construction of the grand church began in 1941 based on L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Irsy’s plans. Sadly only the crypt was completed due to the war. The small church suffered significant damage. However parishioners quickly restored it after the war with donations.
The parish sold the stored materials intended for the large church. They then used the funds to renovate the small church. This included creating a new liturgical space. Later the church expanded to 375 square meters.
An interesting point is the iron statue of Christ in the small park. It was brought from the Notre Dame de Sion convent in 1950. In 1975, a statue of Mary by J\u00e1nos M\u00e1riahegyi was placed opposite it.
The Keresztel\u0151 Szent J\u00e1nos templom also has a connection to Hungarian political history. A memorial plaque commemorates Dr. Antall J\u00f3zsef. He was baptized here and later became prime minister. His father and grandfather were also honored. All three were citizens of Pest\u00fajhely.
