Does the Bosphorus Strait whisper secrets to the stones of the Keresteciler Merkez Cami? Here before us stands the Keresteciler Merkez Cami a testament to Istanbul’s layered history and architectural fusion. Though I don’t have the full story about this particular mosque, let me tell you about a very similar one nearby.

Let’s talk about the Ortaköy Mosque also known as the Büyük Mecidiye Camii. It shares a similar story and architectural style, giving us a glimpse into the world of 19th-century Istanbul. Sultan Abdülmecid I commissioned the Ortaköy Mosque. Its construction finished around 1854 or 1856. The Ortaköy Mosque stands proudly at the Ortaköy pier square a vibrant spot on the Bosphorus.

Father and son Garabet Balyan and Nikoğayos Balyan designed it. This dynamic duo also shaped the nearby Dolmabahçe Palace and Dolmabahçe Mosque. The Balyans infused the Ortaköy Mosque with an eclectic style. You can see Neoclassical elements mingling with the Ottoman Baroque style.

Imagine the scene in 1720. A smaller mosque stood here but the Patrona Halil Uprising in 1731 ruined it. The current Ortaköy Mosque rose from those ashes. Over the years the Keresteciler Merkez Cami Ortaköy Mosque faced challenges. The 1894 Istanbul earthquake caused damage. A minor fire in 1984 left its mark. Restoration work became essential. In 1909 the original fluted minarets were replaced with simpler masonry. By the 1960s the Ortaköy Mosque was leaning. The dome was near collapse. The foundations were reinforced. A new concrete dome was built. The mosque reopened in 1969. A three-year restoration concluded in 2014 costing almost 7 million liras.

The Ortaköy Mosque has a two-story imperial apartment for the Sultan. The main prayer hall has a square plan topped by a dome. Stone-carved reliefs adorn the facades. Two rows of windows bring in light. The minarets feature balconies resembling Corinthian capitals.

Inside marble and porphyry create the mihrab and minbar. Trompe-l’œil frescoes decorate the dome. These paintings include niche-like windows with curtains. You’ll also see rows of mihrabs. Abdülmecid I a skilled calligrapher created several calligraphy panels himself.

Though modest in scale the Ortaköy Mosque feels spacious. Tall windows reflect the water creating a play of light. The Baroque period decor adds vibrancy. Sunlight streams in creating an atmosphere of life. As you stand before the Keresteciler Merkez Cami remember the Ortaköy Mosque and the echoes of history. It is a reminder of Istanbul’s architectural evolution. It embodies the spirit of its people.
