Hidden beneath the shade of Mount Faber lies Keramat Radin Mas. This isn’t just any shrine. It’s the resting place of Radin Mas Ayu a Javanese princess whose story is woven into the very fabric of Singapore’s history. Keramat Radin Mas commemorates this remarkable woman whose life was a blend of royal lineage secret romance and tragic sacrifice.

Radin Mas Ayu’s story begins with a forbidden love. Her father Pangeran Adipati Agung a crown prince fell for a commoner a lead dancer. Their secret marriage angered the Sultan. He plotted to murder the entire family. Radin Mas and her father barely escaped. They fled to Temasek the old name for Singapore seeking refuge. They settled in Telok Blangah a coastal village.

Life in Temasek wasn’t without its challenges. Radin Mas’s stepmother and her nephew Tengku Bagus plotted against the princess and her father. They imprisoned Pangeran. They threatened Radin Mas to marry Tengku Bagus or her father would be killed. The scheme was discovered. Pangeran was rescued by Radin Mas’s stepbrother Tengku Chik. However Tengku Bagus fearing revenge attacked Pangeran. Radin Mas bravely shielded her father. The keris a curved dagger meant for her father pierced her heart instead.

Today Keramat Radin Mas stands as a testament to Radin Mas Ayu’s courage and sacrifice. The shrine is a simple structure. Tombstones wrapped in yellow cloth sit on a raised platform. A spring once nearby was believed to have healing powers. It’s now closed due to the disturbance it caused to nearby residents. Despite the simplicity of the shrine Keramat Radin Mas remains a place of pilgrimage and reflection. People come to pay their respects to the Golden Princess whose life story continues to inspire generations. Her memory lives on not only in this shrine but also in the names of places like Radin Mas Primary School and the former Masjid Radin Mas. The legend of Radin Mas Ayu is more than just a historical account. It’s a tale that speaks to the resilience of the human spirit the power of love and the enduring legacy of a princess who sacrificed everything for her father.
