“Efficient and reliable” is how they describe it. Let’s talk about the Keppel Merlimau Cogen Power Plant. This power plant stands on Jurong Island. It plays a crucial role in Singapore’s energy landscape.
Keppel Merlimau Cogen is a 1300 MW combined cycle gas turbine power plant. It began operations in 2007. The plant expanded in 2013. It provides electricity to customers across Singapore.
This power plant was the first independent power project. It entered Singapore’s electricity market after January 2003. That’s when the National Electricity Market of Singapore was implemented.
The Keppel Merlimau Cogen plant was built in two phases. Phase 1 started commercial operation in April 2007. It has a generation capacity of 500 MW. Phase 2 added another two power trains. Each has a capacity of 400 MW. These were completed in March and July 2013.
The plant is connected to Singapore’s electricity transmission network. It supports surrounding industries. They rely on it for their electricity needs.
Keppel Merlimau Cogen is operated and maintained by KMC O&M. An experienced team ensures high operating standards. They use planned and preventive maintenance strategies. The plant can provide black start services. It can also operate on diesel. This strengthens its ability to provide reliable energy with minimal disruption.
The power plant consistently operates with high efficiency. Continuous innovation and technology upgrades have been implemented. These efforts have steadily decreased the plant’s CO2 emissions. This reflects Keppel’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint.
The power plant runs primarily on natural gas. It can also use oil if there’s a shortage of natural gas. Keppel Gas Ltd supplies the fuel.
GE Power was selected to render EPC services for the gas fired power project.
The power generated is sold to Keppel Electric. This is under a power purchase agreement for 15 years. The contracted capacity is 1300MW.
Keppel Merlimau Cogen supplies steam and water to industrial customers. This cogeneration facility is located at the Tembusu sector of Jurong Island. This area serves as a major industrial hub.
Keppel Merlimau Cogen is more than just a power plant. It’s a commitment to efficient and reliable energy. It’s a dedication to reducing environmental impact. It powers Singapore’s present and future.
