“Whispers of history echo” Do you hear them at Kent Ridge Park? This 47-hectare park in southwestern Singapore is more than just greenery. It is a living testament to Singapore’s past.

Kent Ridge Park stands between the Singapore Science Park and the National University of Singapore. The park was named in honour of the duchess and duke of Kent. But its story stretches back much further.

Originally, Kent Ridge Park was a lowland evergreen forest. In the early 19th century, settlers transformed it. They planted rubber, pepper, gambier, and pineapple. These plantations faced challenges. The Japanese Occupation from 1942 to 1945 led to their destruction or abandonment.

Kent Ridge Park played a vital role in World War II. The British army used it as a fortress. Its strategic location controlled access to the Alexandra area. This area housed military installations and the British Military Hospital.

Bukit Chandu within Kent Ridge Park witnessed a fierce battle. In February 1942, the Japanese 18th Division attacked. They faced Charlie Company of the Malay Regiment. The 42-man platoon fought bravely for 48 hours. They were led by 2nd Lieutenant Adnan Saidi. The Malay Regiment slowed the Japanese advance. Despite their courage, they were defeated on February 14.

In 1952, Pasir Panjang Park was renamed Kent Ridge Park. This commemorated the visit of the duchess and duke of Kent. A plaque marked their visit at Kent Ridge Road and South Buona Vista Road.

To mark the 50th anniversary of World War II’s end, a plaque was erected at Carpark B in 1995. Kent Ridge Park became one of Singapore’s 11 World War II sites. The Ministry of Defence added M114 Howitzer guns and AMX-13 Light Tanks. Kent Ridge Park became the Army Green Park.

In 2002, Reflections at Bukit Chandu opened. It is a World War II interpretative centre. It honours the Malay Regiment’s bravery.

Today, Kent Ridge Park attracts diverse visitors. Families, fitness enthusiasts, bird watchers, and students enjoy its attractions. The park has lookout points with panoramic views. Carpark B is the highest point at 61 m above sea level. From here, one can see West Coast Park and the southern islands.

Nature trails, cycling tracks, and fitness areas are available. The 3.5-kilometre mountain bike trail is known for its technical challenges. A 280-metre-long canopy walk links the park to Reflections at Bukit Chandu. This provides nature lovers an immersive experience.

Kent Ridge Park is part of the Southern Ridges. This is a 10-kilometre expanse of greenery. It connects Mount Faber and Telok Blangah Hill parks.

Kent Ridge Park’s carefully preserved natural vegetation thrives. Trees like tembusu, acacia, and simpoh air grow here. Native plants such as pitcher plants can also be found. Birds like sunbirds and kingfishers inhabit the park. Squirrels and fruit bats are among the other creatures.

Kent Ridge Park stands as a reminder. It commemorates Singapore’s history and natural beauty. It is a space for reflection and recreation. It connects people with the past and present.
