Designated in July 1968, the Kent Downs covers 340 square miles. That’s 878 square kilometers. Imagine rolling chalk hills. Picture ancient woodlands. Envision sweeping valleys. That is Kent Downs. Its highest point is Toy’s Hill. It rises 250m above sea level.
The Kent Downs National Landscape boasts 38 Sites of Special Scientific Interest. That includes nature reserves. These include North Downs beech-yew woodlands. They also include a stretch of chalk cliffs. The area’s geology defines its views and wildlife. Much of it is chalk. You’ll discover dramatic scarps. You’ll see valleys and cliffs. These create a diverse patchwork. Chalk grassland spreads out. Ancient woodland stands tall. There are orchards and hop gardens. Cobnut plats dot the area. Chalk rivers flow gently. Pasture and heathland complete the scene.
Sheep and horses graze the open land. Farms cover 64% of the area. Almost 70% of the woodlands are ancient. They have been there since at least 1600AD. Bluebells carpet the ground. The North Downs Way stretches 153 miles from Farnham to Dover. Hikers take 10 to 14 days to complete it. They walk 10-15 miles per day. The trail offers panoramic views.
