Wow Kensington Prep School what a history. This impressive school for girls aged 4 to 11 has quite a journey. It wasn’t always in Fulham you know.
Kensington Prep School boasts a rich past. Its roots lie in Chelsea High School. That school opened in 1873. It was the first school founded by the Girls’ Public Day School Company. That company is now known as the Girls’ Day School Trust. Miss Porter was the first headmistress. She oversaw twenty girls in the initial class.
The school moved to Cromwell Road in Kensington in 1879. It was renamed Kensington High School then. The original Chelsea High School continued until 1894. Another move happened in 1888 to Lytham House. Sadly a bomb destroyed Lytham House during World War II.
The school temporarily relocated to Phillimore Gardens. This was a temporary measure. It lasted for the duration of World War II. After the war the senior school closed. The junior school however remained. It became Kensington Prep School. The school finally moved to its current location in Fulham in 1997.
Today Kensington Prep is known for its innovative approach. It’s an award winning school. The school won the Innovation Award for Teaching and Learning. They received a commendation for pupil experience in 2020. Its impressive facilities include a multi-screen Explore Floor and a multimedia recording studio.
The school is also proud of its notable alumnae. These include author Madalyn Aslan. Lady Davina Lewis is another alumna. She is the daughter of Prince Richard Duke of Gloucester. Kensington High School’s alumnae are equally impressive. Emily Davison the suffragette attended. So did Clarissa Eden spouse of former Prime Minister Anthony Eden. Eleanor Rathbone a prominent MP and women’s rights campaigner also attended. Kensington Prep School continues to educate and inspire young women. It carries on the legacy of its predecessors. Its commitment to excellence is clear. This school deserves its reputation.
