Picture a sprawling green expanse. This is Kensington Gardens a haven of history and fairytale charm. Originally part of Hyde Park a royal hunting ground. King William III and Queen Mary transformed it. They built Kensington Palace creating a private garden for their new home. Queen Mary’s Dutch-style garden featured formal flower beds and box hedges.
Queen Caroline wife of George II further shaped Kensington Gardens. She commissioned Charles Bridgeman a visionary landscape designer. Together they created the Serpentine a man-made lake designed to appear natural. They also pioneered a clever boundary a ditch called a ha-ha. This surprise element inspired similar designs across the country. For centuries Kensington Gardens remained largely private. Only in 1841 did it open to the public. Initially only on Saturdays and only to the ‘respectably dressed’.
Queen Victoria added two significant features. She commissioned the Italian Gardens inspired by the Isle of Wight. She also commissioned the Albert Memorial a grand tribute to her late husband Prince Albert. The memorial showcases Prince Albert holding the catalogue of the 1851 Great Exhibition a testament to his contributions.
Kensington Gardens also holds magical stories. J M Barrie a local resident found inspiration here. His visits led to the creation of Peter Pan. In 1912 a bronze statue of Peter Pan was placed in the Gardens. It shows Peter with squirrels rabbits mice and fairies. Children flock to see the statue generation after generation. Near the Peter Pan statue is the Elfin Oak. It’s an ancient tree stump carved with fairies and animals. Ivor Innes created this whimsical design in 1930.
