Did you know that Kempton Park Racecourse boasts a history stretching back to 1878? Its origins lie in a chance encounter. Businessman S H Hyde and his wife were enjoying a carriage ride in 1870. They stumbled upon Kempton Manor and Park for sale. Hyde saw potential. Six years later Kempton Park Racecourse opened its gates.
Kempton Park isn’t just a racecourse. It’s a significant part of Sunbury-on-Thames history. The land was once part of a manor mentioned in the Domesday Book. It even had royal connections. Henry III and Henry VIII were known to visit the area. The land has seen many transformations over the centuries. From a royal manor to a thriving racecourse its story is fascinating.
The racecourse itself is impressive. It has two courses for flat and National Hunt racing. The King George VI Chase on Boxing Day is a highlight. This prestigious Grade 1 race is open to horses aged four and older. Kempton Park has also hosted other notable races like the Coral Trophy Handicap Chase. It even had a unique mile-long Jubilee Course. This course was used for the Jubilee Handicap. Sadly this was abandoned after the racecourse’s renovation in 2006. Today the site is home to a synthetic all-weather track. Racing can now take place whatever the weather.
Beyond the races Kempton Park has other attractions. There’s a weekly market. Antiques markets are held twice a month. The venue also hosts seasonal wedding fairs. Two restaurants and reception areas are available for private events. Kempton Park has been used as a filming location too. The 1956 movie Dry Rot was partially filmed there. The 1985 television programme The Optimist also used the racecourse for some scenes.
Kempton Park has faced challenges. In 2017 there were plans to close the site for housing development. Fortunately those plans were revised. Racing continues at Kempton Park.
