Is there a more tranquil setting than a place of worship? Kelvyn Park Presbyterian Church, located right here in Chicago, is no exception. The church, a cornerstone of the community, traces its roots back to the early 20th century. Kelvyn Park Presbyterian Church was officially established in 1910 with a modest congregation of 44 members. Interestingly, the church’s story isn’t confined to its current building. The congregation initially gathered at Sheridan Hall, at the corner of Clark Street and Lunt Avenue. Imagine their excitement when they finally acquired this property in 1911. The first church building, completed in 1912, wasn’t the grand structure we see today. It was a smaller building, costing around $15,000, and now serves as the church’s parlor. But by the 1920s, the congregation had outgrown their first home. This sparked a fundraising campaign, aiming to gather an ambitious $150,000 for a new church building. Their hard work paid off. The result is the beautiful Gothic Revival style building we see today, designed by the Norwegian-born architect Ivar Viehe-Naess. It’s fascinating to think that this building, dedicated in 1927, has stood the test of time, witnessing decades of Chicago’s history. Kelvyn Park Presbyterian Church remains a vibrant hub for the community, much like it was back then. It’s a place where faith, history, and community intertwine.
