Did you know Kelsey Park in Beckenham boasts a history stretching back to the 12th century? Kelsey Park wasn’t always the vibrant green space we see today. Its story begins long before 1913 its official opening. The land was once owned by the Lord of the Manor of Beckenham. Imagine William Kelsiulle in 1408. He built a house near a waterfall on two meadows. This marked the beginning of the Kelsey Estate. The estate changed hands several times over the centuries. The Brograve family owned it for two hundred years. Then the Burrells took over. They added an oratory or chapel in 1479. The estate grew to over 3000 acres. A grand mansion was built. But the first mansion disappeared by the 19th century. A second mansion was constructed. This one became a rambling Gothic Revival house under the Hoare banking family. They made significant improvements. They added lodges a cottage hospital a fire station and a chapel. Charles Hoare even set up stagecoach services between Beckenham and Sevenoaks. He was a keen cricketer too. By the late 1800s the estate became a convent. Following Charles Hoare’s death in 1909 the estate was up for sale. Tom Thornton a local journalist campaigned successfully for Beckenham Council to buy it. They bought 21 acres transforming it into the public park we know and love. Right Honourable John Burns MP officially opened Kelsey Park on May 31 1913. Today Kelsey Park remains a beloved community space. It features a café toilets a children’s play area tennis courts a mini golf course and more. The Friends of Kelsey Park a non-profit organization actively works to maintain and improve the park.
