Imagine this: a grand edifice rises before you. This is Budapest’s Keleti Railway Station. Completed in 1884, Keleti station is more than just a transport hub. It is a symbol of Budapest’s rich history.

Budapest needed a central station. The city was growing. Traffic was increasing. The government approved the station but an economic downturn delayed construction. Finally in 1881 construction began.

Keleti’s name means “Eastern Railway Station”. This name reflects its original role. It served lines from eastern Hungary including Transylvania and the Balkans. The Nyugati or Western Railway Station served lines toward Vienna and Paris.

The station’s architecture is eclectic. Gyula Rochlitz and János Feketeházy designed it. Rochlitz visited many European railway stations for inspiration. The main facade features statues of James Watt and George Stephenson. These figures represent engineering and invention. Inside, Károly Lotz’s frescoes add artistic beauty. Lotz also painted frescoes in the Parliament and the Opera House.

Step inside Keleti station. Notice the play of light and shadow. Imagine travelers from across Europe. They once bustled through these halls. Electric lights illuminated the station from the beginning. There were 644 bulbs inside and outside.

However, Keleti station didn’t have a grand opening. On August 16, 1884, a train simply departed for Miskolc. It was pulled by a steam engine. This marked the start of reliable transport from Keleti.

During World War II, bombings severely damaged Keleti station. The waiting rooms and main halls suffered greatly. After the war, significant restoration took place. This helped Keleti station to honor its past.

Look out onto Baross Square. Gábor Baross has a statue there. The square underwent redevelopment to improve access to the metro. Keleti station connects to Metro lines 2 and 4.

Did you know that Keleti stands on three thousand piles? High water levels during construction required significant reinforcement.

The facade is 43 meters tall. Gyula Bezerédi sculpted the allegorical figure on top. Bezerédi also created the George Washington statue in City Park.

Also, Keleti station has a network of cellars underneath. People used these as shelters during the war.

Today, Keleti remains a vital transport hub. It serves many international and domestic routes. Trains connect Budapest to cities like Zurich and Munich. EuroCity trains run to Vienna and Cluj Napoca.

Keleti Railway Station has even appeared in movies. It features in “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” and “Black Widow”.

Keleti station is more than just bricks and mortar. It embodies Budapest’s spirit of resilience and innovation. As you leave Keleti station, remember its story. It is a story of progress and connection.
