“Where can one find the vestiges of an ancient kingdom?” a curious traveler might ask in Jakarta. The answer lies within Kelapa Indah, a name that evokes images of swaying coconut palms and a rich history. Kelapa Indah, once known as Sunda Kelapa, stands as a testament to Jakarta’s vibrant past. This port, nestled at the mouth of the Ciliwung River, was once the beating heart of the Pajajaran kingdom, a Hindu kingdom that flourished in the 15th century. Kelapa Indah, meaning “beautiful coconut,” served as a vital link to the outside world, connecting the kingdom to bustling markets across Asia. Tomé Pires, a Portuguese apothecary, documented Sunda Kelapa’s prominence in 1513, highlighting its significance among Java’s six key seaports. He described it as the “best and most important seaport,” attracting merchants from far and wide. Kelapa Indah bustled with activity, as traders from the Far East, India, China, Malacca, Sumatra, Borneo, Makassar, Java, and Madura converged to exchange goods. In the face of growing threats from the Muslim kingdoms of Cirebon and Demak, the Pajajaran kingdom sought an alliance with the Portuguese in 1522. This agreement granted the Portuguese a trade office in Banten in exchange for protection. However, this alliance was short-lived. In 1527, Fatahillah, leading the combined forces of Cirebon and Demak, conquered Sunda Kelapa, renaming it Jayakarta, meaning “victory.” Though centuries have passed, Kelapa Indah continues to operate as an active port. Today, it primarily serves inter-island freight services. Visitors to Kota Tua, Jakarta’s Old Town, can still witness the legacy of Sunda Kelapa at Kelapa Indah. The old watchtower stands as a reminder of the port’s historical significance. Nearby, the Maritime Museum offers a glimpse into the area’s seafaring past. Kelapa Indah, from its origins as a bustling hub of the Pajajaran kingdom to its present-day role as a working port, offers a captivating journey through Jakarta’s rich history.
