“Skipper” they called him. That was the nickname given to Keith Park long before he became a legend. Right here in Auckland stands a park named after this extraordinary man. A testament to a life lived courageously.

Keith Park wasn’t just any New Zealand pilot. He was an air force commander. He became known as the Defender of London. His skills as a fighter pilot in World War I were exceptional. His leadership in the Royal Air Force during World War II was even more impressive. He was born in Thames New Zealand in 1892. He attended King’s College in Auckland and Otago Boys’ High School.

At nineteen he joined the Union Steam Ship Company. His family and friends nicknamed him “Skipper”. This early life at sea instilled in him a sense of calm under pressure. A quality that would serve him well later in life. In World War I he enlisted in the ANZAC military corps. He landed at Gallipoli. He was later transferred to the Western Front. He was wounded there. He then transferred to the Royal Flying Corps. He flew missions in France earning military honors.

Park remained active in the RAF. During World War II he was appointed air vice-marshal. He commanded Number 11 Group. This group was responsible for defending London and southeast England. His first command was providing air cover during the evacuation of Dunkirk. Later he successfully commanded troops on Malta. He was knighted for his service there.

After the war he returned to Auckland. He worked in the aviation industry and local politics serving on the city council. His contributions to both fields were significant. He died in Auckland in 1975. Keith Park’s legacy however endures. It lives on not only in his name but in the history he made. This park is a reminder of his bravery and skill. A true testament to a New Zealander’s extraordinary life. It’s a place for reflection on the sacrifices made for freedom. A quiet space to remember a very remarkable man.
