Ever wondered why a serene shrine thrives amidst Tenjin’s commercial heart? This is Kego Shrine. Time seems to slow here offering a peaceful escape.

Kego Shrine has a rich history. It embodies the hopes of pilgrims seeking refuge from misfortune. Kego Daijin is enshrined here. This is a collective name for three gods. Yasomagatsuhi no Kami controls calamity. Kaminaohi no Kami and Onaohi no Kami ward off disaster. Together they represent escaping disasters.

Legend says Kego Shrine was erected around 200 AD. It was a thank you after Empress Jingu’s success in Korea. The shrine’s name comes from the Heian period. Guards defended the village against foreign armies. The village was named Kego meaning guard. In 1608 the shrine was moved here.

Look closely at the stone plaque on the torii gate. It is said that Kuroda Nagamasa wrote the shrine’s name on it. He was the first lord of Fukuoka Domain.

Kego Shrine offers unique ema plaques. Pilgrims receive a secret yellow sticker. This protects their personal information on the plaque. The charm reads Okamori instead of Omamori. Both are pronounced Omamori. The shrine crest was redesigned in 2016. It now features the character “Ko” from Kego. This reinforces the benefits of worshiping here.

Notice the sacred water fountain. The water is delicious. There is also a foot spa nearby. It is perfect for relaxing tired feet. Towels are available for 100 yen.

On the grounds is Imai Inari Shrine. The fox statues here are smiling. It is very rare. One even shows its teeth. Pet them for good luck. Legend tells of Sobei a tofu maker. He offered fried tofu to the Inari Shrine daily. One day a fox smiled at him. A samurai’s daughter smiled after eating Sobei’s tofu. Sobei’s business became prosperous. The smiling fox became a symbol of good fortune.

Kego Shrine is open from 6:30 am to 6 pm. The shrine office is open from 9 am to 4:30 pm. Kego Shrine is a short walk from Tenjin Station.
