Ever wondered where the name Kebun Baru comes from? Kebun Baru means “new garden” in Malay. This name reflects the tranquil nature of this area. It was adapted from Kampong Kebun Baharu.

Kebun Baru is a subzone within Ang Mo Kio in Singapore. It is located in the west of Ang Mo Kio. Mayflower district and Bishan Ang Mo Kio Park bound it. Kebun Baru offers a blend of public and private housing. The area is known for its town park.

This precinct has a unique kampung spirit. This spirit harkens back to Singapore’s pre developmental years. It’s like a hidden enclave frozen in time.

One of Kebun Baru’s highlights is the Kebun Baru Birdsinging Club. This is the island’s largest bird singing arena. Imagine hundreds of birds singing in unison. Their songs fill the air creating a symphony.

The Kebun Baru Birdsinging Club began as a small gathering in the 1970s. Bird enthusiasts would meet. They hung their cages on trees. In 1987, they erected poles. This marked the club’s unofficial beginning.

Today, the Kebun Baru Birdsinging Club has over 400 poles. These poles hoist songbird abodes every morning. The club also hosts bird singing competitions. Bird lovers come to Kebun Baru from across the island. They arrive early to hoist their birds. Some are here almost every day.

Robin Chua is a co founder of the Kebun Baru Birdsinging Club. He is not a bird enthusiast himself. He registered the club officially in 2008. Chua is passionate about the community. He believes the hobby improves mental health. It takes away the loneliness of being alone at home.

The revamped Kebun Baru Community Club opened in 2018. It offers amenities for families and neighbors. There are lounge areas and barbecue pits. You can also find sports and preschool facilities here. A senior care center is also available.

Kebun Baru strives to create a caring neighborhood. It aims to bring people together as one community. Dedicated volunteers provide activities all year round.

Kebun Baru has a rich history. It was once a single member constituency. Lim Boon Heng was its representative for 11 years. In 2020, Kebun Baru became an SMC again. Henry Kwek is the current Member of Parliament.

The Ang Mo Kio Joint Temple and Mayflower Market are also located here. These landmarks add to the area’s charm.

So, as you explore Kebun Baru, remember its history. Think of the “new garden” it once was. Appreciate the community spirit. Listen to the birds sing. Kebun Baru offers a tranquil escape. It is a place where tradition and community thrive.
