A weathered stone whispers tales of generations. This is Kauser kőfaragó háza. It stands proudly on Gyulai Pál Street. This unassuming building holds a rich history. For centuries the Kauser family shaped Budapest’s landscape. Their legacy is etched in stone throughout the city.

The Kauser family’s story began far from Budapest. It started in Elsass in the early 1700s. They migrated to Hungary settling in Győr. Their journey took them to Pest. There Kauser Egyed Ferenc worked as a stonemason. His son Pál also became a master stonemason. His portrait even survives. It shows a successful craftsman of the time.

Pál’s son József (1788-1841) continued the family tradition. He was a skilled stonemason and builder. He even fought in the Napoleonic Wars. After the wars he traveled. His travels took him through Austria Southern Germany and Switzerland to Paris. He worked there for a time. Upon returning to Pest he received citizenship. He married and had nine children. Eight reached adulthood.

József was a prominent builder and stone carver. He worked on the Rokus Chapel. He left behind a substantial legacy. This included a stone carving workshop. It was in Józsefváros his house a workshop and a carving yard. Kőfaragó Street still stands as a testament to his legacy.

József’s children mostly followed in his footsteps. His sons János and Lipót were among the most successful. János studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts. He became a decorative sculptor and master stone carver. He worked on the sculptural decoration of the Pest Lions House. János served on Pest’s city council. His wife Alojza Kölber was related to Semmelweis Ignác. This connection shows the Kausers’ deep roots in the community.

Lipót’s architectural achievements were even more significant. He learned his trade in Pest. After his apprenticeship he traveled. He worked in Vienna and Regensburg. He returned to Pest after his father’s death. He became a master builder. Lipót partnered with Lajos Frey. Together they designed notable buildings such as the Honvéd building. They also designed the former building of the First Hungarian General Insurance Company.

Lipót later partnered with Frigyes Feszl and Károly Gerster. They collaborated on numerous projects. Because none held master builder status their plans were registered under Lőrinc Zofahl. He likely also oversaw the construction. Their office and homes were together in the Széchenyi House on Széchenyi Square. Their collaboration extended beyond architecture. They even attempted to found a guild. During their collaborations Feszl managed the architecture. Gerster the engineering. Kauser handled the practical aspects.

Kauser Lipót’s work in the 1850s and 1870s shaped Pest. He was involved in the construction and modernization of many buildings. He worked on residential buildings factories and hotels. He even worked on official buildings like the Teleki Palace. He also designed the Traitler villa. His expertise earned him respect. He even participated in the design competition for the new Parliament building.

Kauser Lipót’s legacy as an architect is undeniable. Kauser kőfaragó háza stands as a reminder of the enduring contribution of the Kauser family to the city of Budapest. It’s a testament to their artistry skill and dedication. It’s a story etched in stone and time.
