Didn’t you ever wonder about the hidden waterways snaking through Auckland? Today, we’re uncovering the story of one such gem: Kaurimu Stream. It is a humble stream in West Auckland. But it plays a vital role in the larger ecosystem.

Kaurimu Stream is a tributary of the Oratia Stream. The Oratia Stream eventually flows into the Te Wai-o-Pareira or Henderson Creek. This creek then connects to the Waitematā Harbour. So Kaurimu Stream is connected to the larger waterways of the region.

The Oratia Stream’s history is intertwined with the story of early Auckland. The stream is in the traditional rohe of Te Kawerau ā Maki. Radiocarbon evidence shows that the Oratia Stream area was occupied from at least the 16th century. The name “Oratia” comes from a pā. This pā existed on the western banks of the stream near Holdens Road.

In 1841, Thomas Canty began milling kauri timber. He obtained logging rights in the area in 1843. European settlers used the Oratia Stream to transport logs downstream to Henderson. The Oratia Stream was even known as Cantys Creek during those early colonial days. Today, Cantys Creek is the name of one of the Oratia Stream’s tributaries. Just like Kaurimu Stream.

The Oratia Stream begins south of Waiatarua. It flows northeast through Oratia. The stream changes course at Glen Eden. It then flows northwest towards Parrs Park. In Sunnyvale, it meets the Waikumete Stream and the Millbrook Esplanade. Finally, it flows north to Henderson. There, at Te Kōpua, it becomes the Te Wai-o-Pareira or Henderson Creek. This area is now Falls Park and Tui Glen Reserve.

Besides Kaurimu Stream, the Oratia Stream has other tributaries. These include Potter Stream, Bendall Creek, Cantys Stream, and Cochran Stream. The Waikumete Stream flows north from Titirangi through Glen Eden.

The land around the Oratia Stream is an alluvial flood zone. Historically, it was forested with tōtara, tītoki, and west coast kōwhai. The stream is home to the freshwater crab Amarinus lacustris.

Between the mid-2000s and the 2020s, Project Twin Streams undertook large-scale riparian planting. This project aimed to restore the native flora along the Oratia Stream. The Te Kawerau ā Maki Deed of Settlement Schedule also highlights the stream’s importance.

Next time you’re near Kaurimu Stream, take a moment to appreciate its connection to the larger story. The Kaurimu Stream connects to the Oratia Stream. From milling kauri timber to restoring native flora. The Kaurimu Stream flows through the heart of Auckland’s past and present.
