“Unrelenting Curiosity for Learning.” Does that sound like a motto you might find inspiring here at Kauri Flats School? This is the school’s vision for its students. Kauri Flats School opened its doors in February 2017. The location is 181 Walters Road in Takanini.
Kauri Flats School serves children from Years 1 to 8. Initially, there were only 36 students. However, the roll quickly grew. The school’s capacity can cater to 700 students.
Matthew Williams is the current principal. He leads the school with a commitment to collaboration. The school values thinking, respect, empathy and courage. These values underpin the school’s vision. Kauri Flats School aims to support children in being academically successful and socially aware.
The school’s architecture is noteworthy. Synergine managed the construction of several single-level buildings. These buildings include classrooms, a hall and a science block. There is also an administration building. A satellite unit for the Northern Health School is on site too.
Challenges arose during the construction. The undeveloped site had poor ground conditions. There was a high water table. The project required careful planning. Synergine coordinated specialist consultants. They developed a design that met the Ministry’s needs. They also ensured the school’s requirements were met.
Kauri Flats School focuses on student wellbeing. A positive and inclusive learning environment is very important. The school celebrates the cultures, languages and identities of its learners. Most students attend school regularly. However, the school continues to work toward meeting the Ministry of Education’s attendance target.
Teachers at Kauri Flats School integrate te reo Māori into their programs. Students take on leadership roles for schoolwide events. The school supports learners with additional needs. They also help students with English as a second language. Tailored programmes are provided. Progress is monitored against personalized learning goals.
Leaders and teachers regularly discuss student outcomes. They focus on achievement in reading, writing and mathematics. They also monitor the progress of Māori and Pacific learners. Acceleration of progress is a priority. It is for learners not achieving at expected levels. Student health and wellbeing are also key concerns.
