Can you imagine a town named after a man who never even set foot there? Welcome to Kaufman, Texas, a city steeped in history and named after David S. Kaufman. He was a prominent figure in Texas’ early days, serving as a U.S. Representative and diplomat. Kaufman never actually visited the town that bears his name, but his legacy lives on here. The city started as a fort called Kings Fort in 1840. Dr. William P. King bought 2.5 square miles of land and built the fort for protection. The settlement grew and became Kingsboro five years later. In 1852, the name changed again to Kaufman, honoring the man who gave his name to Kaufman County. The county itself was formed in 1848. Kaufman is more than just a namesake town. It played a role in the infamous story of Bonnie and Clyde. Kaufman was the first place Bonnie Parker was ever incarcerated. During World War II, nearby Camp Kaufman housed German prisoners of war. Today, Kaufman is a city of nearly 7,000 people. It sits at the intersection of US Highway 175 and State Highways 34 and 243, just a short drive from Dallas. While the city boasts a modern highway system, remnants of its past still linger. Think of Bonnie Parker’s time in the local jail. Picture the German POWs at Camp Kaufman. These stories add another layer to Kaufman’s charm.
