Why does this seemingly quiet field hold such significance? It’s not just any field. This is Katonasír. It’s the Budapest War Cemetery.

Budapest War Cemetery lies 16 kilometers northwest of the city. We can reach it by taking Route 10 from the city center toward Dorog. Continue for 14 kilometers until you see a large Auchan Hypermarket. Take the first exit at the roundabout toward Dorog. Continue for about 500 meters. The small road to Solymár will be on your left. The cemetery appears immediately on the left. A small car park sits to the rear.

The cemetery is permanently open to visitors. It contains 173 Commonwealth burials from the Second World War. These are mostly airmen. Their graves were moved here from all over Hungary after the war. Three of these burials remain unidentified. A single First World War burial was moved here in 1958. It came from Rascalmas Roman Catholic Cemetery. The cemetery also holds one French and 37 Polish war graves.

The cemetery has a rectangular shape. A central Cross of Sacrifice stands within. The main entrance offers flat, step-free access. It features a 1.20-meter latched metal double gate. All internal paths are grass and level. A stone bench provides a single seating area. It is at the furthest point from the main entrance. The register box is on the left-hand pillar at the main entrance gate. It is on the inside of the cemetery. A historical notice panel rests on a low concrete plinth. It’s in front of the right-hand pillar at the main entrance gate.

Consider the dedication and care taken here. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission maintains this site. They ensure these fallen heroes are never forgotten. Each year, people visit to pay their respects. They remember the sacrifices made for freedom. The quiet field speaks volumes about courage and remembrance.
