Whispers carried on the wind speak of a unique marvel within Katip Sinan Cami. This mosque, nestled between Istanbul’s Laleli and Kadırga districts on Tahsin Bey Street, holds a secret unlike any other mosque in the world. Katip Sinan Cami is also known as Merdivenli Mescit (Mosque with Stairs). It stands as one of the first mosques constructed after the conquest of Istanbul. Commissioned by Sinan Bey, the head chef of the Ottoman Palace kitchen during the reign of Bayezid II, Katip Sinan Cami was completed in 1496. The mosque’s peculiarity lies within its dome. A coffin rests there, high above the worshippers. Legend tells us that Sinan Bey, having saved diligently for the construction of this mosque, made a peculiar request. He wished to be buried within the dome upon his death. However, upon his passing, he was laid to rest in the courtyard cemetery as tradition dictated. The following morning, the congregation discovered his tomb empty. Sinan Bey’s shrouded body was found resting on the dome’s scaffolding, near the very spot he desired his final resting place to be. Astonished, they returned his body to the grave. Yet, the next morning, the same scene unfolded, his body once again resting upon the dome. This continued for three days. The bewildered congregation, believing this a sign of divine will, finally fulfilled Sinan Bey’s wish. They constructed a coffin and placed him within the dome’s structure, where he remains to this day. While historical records don’t corroborate this tale, the coffin remains a visible testament to the legend within Katip Sinan Cami. So, as you gaze upon the dome, remember the story of Katip Sinan Cami and the chef who found his final resting place amongst the stars.
