Envision a cathedral built not just once but multiple times. The Katedrala Uznesenja Blažene Djevice Marije or simply Dubrovnik Cathedral stands as a testament to resilience. It is a beacon of faith in a city scarred by history.

Records suggest a cathedral existed here as early as the 7th century. Archaeological digs confirm it. The current Baroque-style cathedral sits on top of several former cathedrals. Their foundations lie beneath. A major earthquake in 1667 devastated the city. It destroyed much of the original cathedral. Reconstruction began soon after. The new cathedral was completed in 1713.

When you approach the Dubrovnik Cathedral, notice the four Corinthian columns. They flank the entrance. These slender columns are richly decorated. Above the door, a large Baroque window catches the light.

The facade features two deep niches. These niches contain statues. One depicts Joseph with a Child. The other shows Saint Blaise. He is the patron saint of Dubrovnik. The Dubrovnik Cathedral is built in a three-nave shape. A grand baroque dome sits on top.

Inside, it is a basilica-type building. The central nave is high. Massive columns line two aisles. At the intersection of the nave and transepts is a large dome. It showcases Baroque design. The Cathedral of Dubrovnik also has three apses and numerous altars.

Take a closer look at the main altar. A beautiful polyptych decorates it. Titian, the Italian Renaissance artist, originally painted this piece in 1552. The painting was moved to Dubrovnik’s Cathedral after the 1667 earthquake. It portrays the Assumption of Mary. Side altars hold paintings by Italian and Dalmatian masters.

There is the Altar of Petilovrijenci. It commemorates three saints. The bones of Montenegro martyr saints were imported to Dubrovnik. They were brought to Dubrovnik Cathedral after the 1667 earthquake damaged their original church.

Another interesting altar is Our Lady of the Port. Sailors once prayed here for safety at sea. They left coral ornaments. Also, don’t miss St. John’s altar. This Baroque altar is made of beautiful purple marble.

The relics found in the Dubrovnik Cathedral consist of sacral dishes and paintings. There are also remains of St. Blaise. Some say it contains pieces of Jesus Christ’s clothes. The head, leg, and arm of St. Blaise are the most important relics. The reliquary containing St. Blaise’s head dates back to the 11th or 12th century. Dubrovnik’s best jewelers meticulously crafted it. The reliquary is shaped like a Byzantine imperial crown. It is decorated with precious stones and enameled medals.

Apart from the reliquaries, the treasury holds precious paintings. Some artworks date back to the 13th century. Famous masters like Padovanini and Palma il Giovane painted some of these pieces.

The Dubrovnik Cathedral has played a significant role in the city’s life. It has been a place of worship. It is a symbol of Dubrovnik’s identity. The cathedral’s serene atmosphere offers a peaceful retreat. The Dubrovnik Cathedral is a timeless masterpiece. It continues to inspire visitors today. Its architecture and history make it a must-see landmark. The treasury costs 3 euros to enter. Be sure to check out the opening hours before you visit. They vary depending on the month.

The people of Dubrovnik worked hard to rebuild this place. They showed everyone they could keep their faith strong. The Dubrovnik Cathedral isn’t just a church. It’s a sign that Dubrovnik keeps going strong.
