Kassel is more than just a picturesque location. It holds a significant place in German history and culture. As the former capital of Hesse-Kassel, it boasts palaces and parks. The Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe is even a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Let’s delve into the story of Kassel. Imagine King Conrad I signing deeds here in 913 AD. Back then, it was a fortification called Chasella. The name’s origin is debated. It could be from Castellum Cattorum a castle of the Chatti tribe. Another theory suggests it’s from Frankonian words meaning town hall in a valley.

Kassel’s city rights were certified in 1189. However the exact date they were granted remains a mystery. A castle was built in 1277 but it was replaced later by the Kassel City Palace.

In 1567, Hesse was divided and Kassel became the capital of Hesse-Kassel. It became a Calvinist Protestant center. Fortifications protected it from Catholic enemies. Secret societies flourished here. In 1685, Kassel welcomed 1700 Huguenots. Landgrave Charles ordered the construction of the Hercules monument and the Orangerie.

The Brothers Grimm lived in Kassel in the early 19th century. They collected and wrote their famous fairy tales here. Around 1803, the Landgraviate became a Principality. Napoleon later annexed it. In 1807, Kassel was the capital of the Kingdom of Westphalia under Napoleon’s brother.

In 1866, Prussia annexed Kassel. It developed into a major industrial center and railway junction. Henschel and Son a large locomotive manufacturer was based here. Napoleon III was imprisoned in Wilhelmshöhe Palace after the Battle of Sedan in 1870.

During World War II, Kassel was the headquarters for Germany’s Wehrkreis IX. A subcamp of Dachau provided forced labor for Henschel facilities. Allied prisoners of war were deployed to forced labor. The bombing of Kassel in World War II destroyed 90% of the downtown area.

The US 80th Infantry Division captured Kassel in April 1945. Bitter house-to-house fighting caused further devastation. After the war, much of the city center was rebuilt in the style of the 1950s.

In 1949, Kassel was considered as a potential capital of West Germany but Bonn won. In 1972, Willy Brandt and Willy Stoph met in Wilhelmshöhe Palace for negotiations. In 1991, the central rail station moved to Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe.

Today, Kassel is a vibrant city. It is known for the documenta exhibitions of contemporary art. The city also has a public university. It has a multicultural population. Kassel combines historical heritage with modern life. The old town has impressive baroque architecture. Residents are proud of their cultural offerings.

Kassel is edgy despite its storybook aesthetic. The documenta challenges viewers with thought-provoking art. It is a great place for culture and stunning scenery. Kassel is on the doorstep of UNESCO World Heritage sites and the Reinhardswald forest.
