Remember the sound of laughter echoing through the air. That’s Kashi Kaen Theme Park. It was Fukuoka City’s only theme park for many years. Sadly, it closed its gates permanently on December 30, 2021.
Kashi Kaen first opened in 1956. For 65 years, it offered roller coasters and kiddie rides. Many rides closed over time but photos commemorated them. In its later years, Kashi Kaen became Sylvanian Families themed. This aimed to attract a new generation.
Nishi Nippon Railway Company owned Kashi Kaen. The park faced declining attendance. The COVID-19 pandemic made things worse. The company decided to close unprofitable businesses including Kashi Kaen.
Many local students have fond memories of Kashi Kaen. A school trip there triggered childhood nostalgia. It was one last chance to see the park before it closed. A teacher described it as a symbolic transition for the students.
One visitor enjoyed a wagyu steak sandwich from a food truck. They ate it under a dry spot while chatting with students. Another visitor rode the Pegasus roller coaster. They had often seen it from their commute. They felt it wasn’t worth 600 yen but enjoyed the students’ excitement.
The park was renovated into a flower garden. World-famous garden designer Kazuyuki Ishihara supervised it. Beautiful flowers bloomed in every season. Pansies, sunflowers, and cyclamen added vibrant colors.
The Ferris wheel was a symbol of Kashi Kaen. It was renovated for the first time in 44 years. Water Shot was a new attraction. You could shoot targets with water guns to make characters move.
Pegasus was a thrilling roller coaster ride. Superhero Athletic Land NEO was the largest indoor athletic park. Children could play and take pictures with heroes. Kashi Kaen Sylvania Garden featured original characters. The Hanazono Rabbit Family welcomed guests.
Other attractions included Big House with a Light On. The Forest Boutique offered pretty dresses for photos. The Forest Kindergarten hosted craft classes. The Silvania Family Show allowed guests to sing and dance with characters. The Forest Market sold exclusive Sylvania Garden goods.
Park Golf opened in September 2017. This 9-hole course featured natural grass. Leisure Pool opened in the summer. It offered a bucket shower, a flowing pool and slides.
Kashi Kaen offered comfort to visitors. The park left a lasting impression on those who visited. Though closed, memories of Kashi Kaen live on.
