What secrets does this tranquil oasis hold? You might be surprised to learn that Karwarra Australian Plant Garden wasn’t always a garden. This two-hectare plot of land was once part of a farm owned by Thomas Hand, a surveyor from Lilydale. His family worked the land until 1939. Then, in a twist of fate, it was sold to the Shire of Lillydale. Fast forward to 1965, and the Shire decided to allow the Mt Dandenong Horticultural Society to transform this piece of history into a haven for Australian flora. And that’s how Karwarra Australian Plant Garden, as we know it today, came to be! Officially opening its doors in 1971, Karwarra now boasts over 1,400 different species of native plants. It’s a testament to the dedication of those who saw the potential in this land. You can almost feel the passion of Kath Deery, an Australian plant enthusiast who played a key role in its early design and development. Her vision, along with the striking rock outcrops designed by the renowned landscaper Ellis Stones, make this garden truly special. And as you wander the pathways, don’t forget to look out for the diverse birdlife. Karwarra is home to over 40 species. Keep your eyes peeled for antechinus, possums, and even the occasional echidna. So take a deep breath and enjoy the peacefulness of Karwarra. It’s more than just a garden, it’s a living, breathing story of passion, dedication, and the enduring beauty of Australian nature.
