Step into the heart of Singapore’s spiritual landscape. Welcome to the Karma Kagyud Buddhist Centre. This haven of serenity wasn’t always here. It began in 1979. His Eminence Kunzig Shamar Rinpoche visited Singapore. His visit sparked a movement. A protem committee formed under the leadership of Mr David Chee Kim Swee. Their mission was clear: establish a Karma Kagyud Buddhist Centre in Singapore. They found a home. A detached house at 17 Jalan Lateh became the Centre’s first administration building.
The Karma Kagyud Buddhist Centre officially registered on April 17 1981. The first management committee followed on March 11 1982. Growth was steady but space became an issue. In 1990 a search began for a larger space. The Centre’s members and devotees rallied. They secured the present location at No 38 Lorong 22 Geylang. The move happened on December 29 1991. Renovations followed in 1993. The Centre celebrated its twelfth anniversary that year. A thousand-person vegetarian dinner marked the occasion. Distinguished guests joined the celebrations including Venerable Shi Ming Yi and Venerable B Dhammaratana.
The Karma Kagyud Buddhist Centre continued its growth. Shangpa Rinpoche became the Abbot in 1998. He guided the Centre’s spiritual direction. His Holiness the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa Trinley Thaye Dorje visited from October 2nd to 10th 2017. This marked a significant milestone. He inaugurated the newly built Centre. He blessed the Centre and its community.
The Karma Kagyud Buddhist Centre stands as a testament to dedication. It serves a community seeking spiritual growth. The Centre offers various programs. Classes meditation teachings and retreats enrich lives. The Centre’s commitment to spreading the Buddha’s teachings continues to blossom. The teachings offered are as profound and relevant today as when Buddha Shakyamuni first uttered them over 2500 years ago.
