Imagine being part of a team gliding across the water. The Karlsruher Rheinklub Alemannia e.V. has been a cornerstone of rowing in Karlsruhe since 1901. It offers a place for everyone from youngsters to seniors to enjoy the sport.

This club isn’t just about competition. It is about community. The Karlsruher Rheinklub Alemannia welcomes rowers of all ages and skill levels. Some start as young as ten through school projects. Others discover rowing later in life. Some join even after turning sixty.

The club’s instructors have fostered a love for rowing among children and teens. They can enjoy it as a hobby or aim for the racing team. Adults find a welcoming environment too. Many members row year-round and stay active into their later years. Their endurance inspires fellow rowers.

Life at Karlsruher Rheinklub Alemannia offers varied experiences. Rowers explore the Rheinhafen and nearby meadows. They take day trips on the Rhine to places like Speyer or Mühlhausen. Some even participate in long-distance regattas.

The club’s history is rich with achievements. In 1903, it took over the boathouse from Ruderverein Salamander. This was after Salamander moved to the Rheinhafen. 1905 marked their first victory in long-distance rowing in Ludwigshafen. By 1906, they joined the German Rowing Federation.

In 1910, the Karlsruher Rheinklub Alemannia built a new boathouse in Maxau. 1912 brought a win in the Königsaachter in Heilbronn. This was their first away win in the eights. That same year, they helped form a regatta association with Ruderverein Sturmvogel Karlsruhe. Together, they organized future Karlsruhe regattas.

The years 1914 to 1918 saw the disruption of sports due to World War I. Sadly, the Karlsruher Rheinklub Alemannia lost twenty-one members. In 1920, the club moved to the Karlsruher Rheinhafen. They built a boathouse in the northern basin. This was due to the heavy disruption of rowing in Maxau.

The Rhine port was occupied by French troops from 1923 to 1924. This was during the Ruhr crisis. The military seized the clubhouse. Rowing was banned in the port and on the Rhine. Training was moved to Maxau harbor and sometimes to the Alb near the Cool Jug.

The club achieved seventy-three wins between 1927 and 1937. They expanded their boat collection and installed a rowing pool. In 1938, they won the Baden Youth Championship in the eight and coxed four. They also placed second in the German Youth Championship in the coxed youth four.

World War II again disrupted sports from 1939 to 1945. The Karlsruher Rheinklub Alemannia lost twenty active athletes. The boathouse was completely destroyed in an air raid on December 4, 1944. The members rebuilt the boathouse through their efforts in 1946.

In 1964, Michael Schwan and Wolfgang Hottenrott achieved significant success. They won the German Championship in the coxless pair. They secured a silver medal at the European Championships in Amsterdam. They also won a bronze medal at the Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Today, the Karlsruher Rheinklub Alemannia continues to thrive. They participate in numerous regattas. The club hosts the Herbstsprint with KRV Wiking in the Karlsruher Rheinhafen. They also organize “All you can row”. This event is supported by the Landesruderverband Baden-Württemberg and the German Rowing Federation. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced rower, the Karlsruher Rheinklub Alemannia welcomes you.
