Wasn’t this a simple wooden structure once? Look at Karlslunde Strandkirke now. This modern church stands proudly. It’s a testament to the growth of Karlslunde Strand. It began as a humble branch of the older Karlslunde Kirke. The church was built to serve the booming coastal community. A simple wooden ‘wandering church’ initially served as a temporary solution. This temporary church stood near the Folehavekrydset in Valby. It was later moved to Karlslunde Strand in 1971. Imagine the transition from that simple wooden structure to this substantial building.
Karlslunde Strandkirke is more than just a building. It’s a reflection of the community’s faith. It’s a place where the spirit of Karlslunde Strand comes alive. The church was designed by the architect twins Ib & Jørgen Rasmussen. They also designed Buddinge Church. The baptismal font and altar silver are the work of silversmith Jørgen Dahlerup. The baptismal basin’s distinctive base is made of blue Rønne granite from Bornholm. A large number of volunteers help plan and facilitate activities at Karlslunde Strandkirke.
The original simple structure wasn’t meant to last. In 1978 Karlslunde Strandsogn became an independent parish. This paved the way for a permanent structure. The current church was inaugurated in 1980. It sits at the south end of the parish. This is due to earlier plans to build another church between Karlslunde and Mosede. Those plans remain unrealized. Moving from the small wooden church to this larger building must have been a significant event for the congregation. They carried the cross from the old church to the new one.
The church’s design reflects the community’s growth and its changing spiritual needs. Initially appearing uncomfortably large it is now considered too small. The church expanded around 1990. Two ceramic reliefs by Rie Marquard Christoffersen were added in 1996/97. They depict Pentecost and Ascension. They hang on either side of the entrance. The church’s history is intertwined with the charismatic renewal movement. This led to a desire for a lively worship style. Prayer plays a vital role. Weekly prayer meetings began in the temporary church. New songs were gradually incorporated into services. Today guitars drums and keyboards are used alongside the organ.
Youth work was once the church’s flagship program. This attracted a large youth population. This changed in the 1990s. The focus shifted towards young families and children’s programs. Despite this many young people remain active. The church has also relied heavily on volunteers. Around 90 people contribute to the church’s work. This reflects the church’s belief that all believers are co-workers in God’s kingdom. Karlslunde Strandkirke’s story shows God’s grace and goodness. It’s a story of ordinary people finding new life in their faith. This makes it a place of refuge and home for many.
