Consider this. A margrave moves his entire residence due to a spat. That’s the story behind Karlsburg Castle.

Karlsburg Castle in Karlsruhe’s Durlach district holds a unique place in Baden’s history. It all began in 1563. Margrave Charles II decided to move his residence from Pforzheim to Durlach.

But what did Durlach offer him? It remains a mystery. Regardless, Charles chose to expand the medieval Karlsburg into a grand palace. His successors continued this expansion.

Then disaster struck in 1689. French troops occupied the city and burned it to the ground. The magnificent Karlsburg Castle was not spared. It fell victim to the flames along with nearly all the houses.

In 1698, Margrave Frederick Magnus returned from exile in Basel. He began the arduous task of rebuilding Karlsburg Castle. Frederick had ambitious dreams. However, money was scarce. The margraviate was in ruins after the war.

A dispute arose with Durlach’s citizens. They were unwilling to support the rebuilding efforts. By 1703, only two wings of Karlsburg Castle were complete. The project was then suspended indefinitely.

Frederick’s son, Margrave Charles III William, had a groundbreaking idea in 1715. He decided to end the dispute and move his court. He chose to build a new palace outside Durlach. This marked the birth of Karlsruhe.

Charles and his court officially moved into the new palace in 1718. His wife, however, preferred Durlach. She remained at Karlsburg Castle until her death in 1743.

Karlsburg Castle later served different purposes. It was used as an administrative office and even military barracks. In 1964, a wing was demolished to create space for the Castle School at Durlach.

Extensive renovations took place from 1973 to 1988. Since 1924, the Pfinzgau Museum has found its home in Karlsburg Castle.

Today, Karlsburg houses a variety of institutions. You’ll find the registry office here. The Pfinzgau Museum showcases local history. The Carpathian-German Museum preserves cultural heritage. Classrooms host adult education programs. The Margrave School educates young minds. The historic banquet hall hosts events. The Durlach city library provides resources for all.

Only the Prinzessinnenbau, the Princesses’ wing, remains of the original historical structure of Karlsburg Castle. It stands as a testament to the castle’s rich past.

So, the next time you pass by Karlsburg, remember its story. Think of margraves. Imagine fiery destruction and ambitious rebuilding. Think of a city born from a disagreement. The stones of Karlsburg Castle whisper tales of Baden’s captivating history.
