Guns, history, and adventure await. Right here at the Karl-May-Museum, we delve into the captivating world of Karl May. This museum is more than just a collection. It is a gateway into the life and works of a beloved author.

Karl May was famous for his adventure novels. They were set in the American Old West, the Orient, and the Middle East. His stories have been translated into 45 languages. The Karl-May-Museum is located in Radebeul. It stands as a testament to May’s enduring legacy.

The museum has two main sections. The first is in Villa Shatterhand. This was Karl May’s home. The second is Villa Bärenfett. This is a log cabin in the garden. It now houses a unique collection of Native American art and culture. This collection is unlike any other in Europe.

Inside Villa Shatterhand, explore Karl May’s original office. See his research room. Admire the famous guns from his tales. These include the “Bear Killer” and the Henry rifle. There is also a remarkable collection of souvenirs. These items are from May’s travels to the Orient and North America. Rare first editions of his books are also on display.

Villa Bärenfett features a rustic wild fireplace. There is a historical diorama called “Return from Battle.” A monumental painting of the “Indian Battle on Little Bighorn” is on display. Elk Ebere created it in 1936. Over 800 ethnologic objects are here. They date back to the 18th and 19th centuries.

The Karl-May-Museum opened in 1928. Karl May’s widow, Klara May, wanted to create a memorial to link his life and work. Ernst Tobis, an Austrian fan, helped found the museum. He donated artifacts, including some controversial items. These were scalps.

The museum had a difficult history. During the Nazi era, the museum was appropriated. After World War II, the museum’s name changed. From 1956 to 1984, it was called the “Indianer Museum”. The East German government suppressed May’s books. The museum refocused on the oppression of Native Americans.

In 1986, the museum regained its original name. After the Berlin Wall fell, attendance declined. People could now travel to the US. In 2021, the museum returned a Native American scalp.

Today, the Karl-May-Museum continues to collect art and artifacts. It preserves the legacy of Karl May. The museum is not just for fans of Karl May. It is for anyone who loves adventure and history. It offers a glimpse into a world of imagination. You can explore the author’s life and the cultures that inspired him.

Before you leave, be sure to visit the museum store. You can purchase Karl May books and souvenirs. Children can enjoy the “Spurenpfad” puzzle trail. Do not miss the Karl May Festival and family days. This is a place for young and old alike. It keeps the spirit of adventure alive.
