“The evil frightful rooms.” That’s how Jenny Marx, wife of the famous Karl Marx, described their dwelling at 28 Dean Street. Right here, marked by this Karl Marx Blue plaque, stood their cramped three-room apartment. The inscription on the Karl Marx Blue plaque simply reads, “KARL MARX 1818-1883 lived here 1851-56.” It’s a stark reminder of the harsh realities faced by the Marx family during those years. Despite their poverty, this location became a crucible for revolutionary thought. In these very rooms, Karl Marx began writing his seminal work, “Das Kapital,” a searing critique of capitalism that still resonates today. He would frequent the British Museum’s library for research, escaping the confines of their humble abode. Sadly, two of their children perished while living at 28 Dean Street. It was a time marked by both “joy and pain,” as Jenny put it. Although their time here was short, the Karl Marx Blue plaque at 28 Dean Street serves as a reminder of the personal struggles that often underpin even the most significant historical shifts. The legacy of Karl Marx, born within these “evil frightful rooms,” continues to inspire debate and discussion worldwide.
