Is it just me, or does this bridge look like it’s holding its breath? We’re standing before the Karl-Carstens-Brücke, affectionately nicknamed the “Strawberry Bridge” by locals. Don’t worry, it’s not blushing because of its fruity alias. The name actually comes from its proximity to a popular strawberry-picking field!

This bridge is more than just a pretty face though. It has a crucial role in Bremen, connecting the Habenhausen and Hastedt districts. Imagine the hassle before 1970, when people had to take a detour to cross the Weser River! Construction began in 1966 and took over four years to complete. The Karl-Carstens-Brücke first opened to pedestrians and cyclists on June 15th, 1970, offering a quicker, more scenic route.

It wasn’t until September 25th, 1971 that the bridge opened to general traffic. Interestingly, it was initially christened the “Werderbrücke” in June 1971. Later, it was renamed in honor of Karl Carstens, a former President of Germany. Today, the Karl-Carstens-Brücke stands as a testament to progress and connectivity, a vital artery in Bremen’s vibrant landscape. And who knows, maybe you’ll spot some strawberry-pickers on your way across!
