During the nineteenth century, the building was known as the ‘Mosaic Mosque’. The mosaics’ fame grew thanks to Thomas Whittemore. He was an American scholar who initiated a restoration in 1930.
Theodore Metochites was a significant figure. Born in 1270 he was an intellectual in the Byzantine Empire. His poetry offers insights into his emotions. Some poems show pride in restoring the Chora Monastery. Others lament his exile.
Thomas Whittemore founded the Byzantine Institute of America in the 1930s. His goal was to preserve Byzantine monuments. The institute restored mosaics in Hagia Sophia and Kariye Camisi.
