Kardinal-Frings-Gymnasium

In 1964, a beacon of knowledge and faith was ignited in Bonn-Beuel, a borough of Bonn. This beacon, the Kardinal-Frings-Gymnasium (KFG), initially known as Erzbischöfliches Gymnasium Beuel, was established by the Archbishop of Cologne, Josef Kardinal Frings. Originally a boys’ school, the KFG opened its doors to girls in 1988, fostering a diverse and inclusive learning environment. The school’s motto, “Pro hominibus constitutus” (Sent for the people), reflects its dedication to nurturing well-rounded individuals. The very architecture of the Kardinal-Frings-Gymnasium tells a story. Designed by the renowned architect Joachim Schürmann, the building complex includes an assembly hall, a sports field, three sports halls, a cafeteria, and even a nuclear bunker. Imagine the echoes of history within these walls. Kardinal-Frings-Gymnasium is more than just bricks and mortar; it’s a place where minds are molded and futures are shaped. English and Latin are compulsory languages. Students can also choose to learn French, Spanish, or even Italian. This commitment to language acquisition reflects the school’s global perspective. The KFG boasts a vibrant music program. Its brass orchestra is renowned, and it even spawned the popular German brass band Querbeat in 2001. This band, active in the Cologne Carnival, adds a touch of festive spirit to the school’s legacy. Beyond academics and music, the Kardinal-Frings-Gymnasium is deeply committed to social responsibility. In 2001, the school launched the Social Project Armenia. Through an annual run, students raise funds to support an exchange program, German lessons at partner schools in Gyumri, and the renovation of village schools in the Shirak region of Armenia. This initiative demonstrates the KFG’s dedication to making a positive impact on the world. In a remarkable event, on July 3, 2018, the KFG hosted a live video call with German ESA astronaut Alexander Gerst from the International Space Station. This unique experience allowed students to connect with the cosmos and expand their horizons beyond the classroom.
