Karanfilköy Külliyesi

Tucked away in the bustling Akatlar neighborhood, the Karanfilköy Külliyesi whispers tales of transformation. The Karanfilköy Külliyesi wasn’t always the grand complex you see today. Imagine a modest, 200-square-meter mescid built in 1961. This small mosque, with its tiled roof and wooden frame, served the community faithfully. It stood on a 950-square-meter plot. It could accommodate 350 worshippers. By 1988, the growing community had outgrown this humble space. The old mescid was demolished. A new vision began to take shape. This vision, spearheaded by the “Karanfilköy Mosque, Hospital, and School Construction and Revitalization Association,” led to the birth of the Karanfilköy Külliyesi as we know it. The foundation of the current Karanfilköy Külliyesi was laid in 1985. The design was inspired by Ottoman mosques. The complex sits on a 3000-square-meter plot. The mosque itself covers 600 square meters. The architects envisioned a rectangular, reinforced concrete structure. It was to have cut stone walls, a dome, twin minarets, and a spacious, arcaded courtyard. The Karanfilköy Külliyesi officially opened for worship in 1988. Today, the Karanfilköy Külliyesi stands as a testament to community spirit and architectural beauty. The complex includes a health clinic, a teahouse, a conference hall, classrooms, and even apartments for mosque staff. The courtyard is paved with marble and features two fountains. The main entrance to the courtyard resembles a triumphal arch. The calligraphy adorning the entrance and the interior of the mosque adds to the spiritual ambiance. Inside the mosque, a breathtaking dome, adorned with intricate calligraphy, rests on four elephant-foot pillars. Sixteen small stained-glass windows encircle the main dome. Thirty-three chandeliers illuminate the prayer hall. The mihrab, minber, and kürsü showcase exquisite marble craftsmanship. The women’s mahfil, shaped like a “U,” embraces the prayer hall. Its walls are decorated with Kütahya tiles. The mahfil offers a unique perspective of the mosque’s splendor. The dome, chandeliers, and vibrant colors create a sense of being immersed in a sea of beauty. The twin minarets, located at the northeast and northwest corners of the mosque, complete the picture. The Karanfilköy Külliyesi is more than just a mosque. It is a vibrant community center. It is a place where people gather for prayer, learning, and social interaction. It continues to evolve and serve the needs of the community.
