Gazing at the Karabaş Veli Cami, imagine its journey through time. This mosque, nestled in Istanbul’s Fatih district, has a story to tell. Karabaş Veli Cami wasn’t always as you see it today. Its first incarnation arose in 1524, thanks to Şeyh Abdurrahman Efendi. This same Şeyh Abdurrahman Efendi penned a work called “Karabaş Tecvidi.” The Karabaş Veli Cami endured, but time took its toll. By 1890, it needed a refresh, which Gonca Hatun provided. However, the years continued their march, and eventually, the structure crumbled. Like a phoenix from the ashes, Karabaş Veli Cami rose again in 1997, rebuilt to stand as a testament to its resilient spirit. Look closely at the mosque. Picture the courtyard with its ablution fountains and restrooms. Imagine ascending the broad marble steps to the son cemaat yeri, the area for latecomers to prayers. Envision the lower ceiling of this space, contrasting with the main mosque, its walls built with cut stone and a tiled roof. The interior of Karabaş Veli Cami holds further secrets. The müezzin’s spot and the imam’s room reside to your right as you enter. The minaret, with its cut-stone base and cylindrical body, beckons the faithful. Beneath the mosque, a basement level exists, its entrance marked “Gonca Hanım Hanımlar kısmı,” indicating a women’s section. In the mosque’s courtyard, near the mihrab, lies the tomb of Karabaş Veli Efendi himself. He was the brother of Ayasofya Şeyhi Ömer Efendi. The nickname “Karabaş” arose from Veli Efendi’s habit of wrapping a black turban around his fez. Karabaş Veli Cami stands as more than just a building. It represents a continuity of faith and community, rebuilt and renewed over centuries. It’s a place where whispers of history intertwine with the present day, inviting you to connect with Istanbul’s rich tapestry.
