Encircled by the majestic Alps, the Kapelle Steg stands as a silent sentinel. It whispers tales of faith and resilience to all who pause at its doorstep. The Kapelle Steg, nestled at the entrance to the Malbuntal valley near the murmuring Malbunbach, is more than just a picturesque chapel. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of the Walser people. This small sanctuary, crowned with its distinctive tower, is dedicated to the patron saints of farmers, St. Wendelin and St. Martin. Its story begins not with grand pronouncements or powerful patrons, but with a humble image. In 1817, this small token of faith inspired the construction of a tiny chapel. This original structure forms the choir of the present-day Kapelle Steg. The congregation grew, and so did the chapel. An extension, the nave, was added in 1834. The Kapelle Steg continued to evolve, mirroring the growth and faith of the community. The early 20th century brought further enhancements. In 1906-1907, a porch and the charming round tower, complete with a bell, graced the chapel. Later, in 1938, a sacristy was added, completing the Kapelle Steg as we see it today. The Kapelle Steg has witnessed generations come and go, their lives intertwined with the rhythms of the valley. It has offered solace in times of hardship and a place of celebration in moments of joy. It stands as a symbol of continuity, a tangible link to the past, and a beacon of hope for the future. As you gaze upon the Kapelle Steg, imagine the echoes of prayers and hymns that have resonated within its walls for over two centuries. Picture the families who have gathered here, seeking comfort and inspiration. This small chapel, with its simple elegance, embodies the enduring power of faith and community in the heart of the breathtaking Liechtenstein landscape.
