Consider the story of a chapel born from compassion. That is the Kapelle Michaelshof. It stands as a testament to faith and social responsibility. We are standing before the Kapelle Michaelshof. It is a place of peace within the Evangelische Stiftung Michaelshof in Rostock-Gehlsdorf.

In 1845, the seeds of this chapel were sown. Inspired by Johann Hinrich Wichern, Rostock citizens founded a “rescue house” for neglected boys. This was the beginning of the Evangelische Stiftung Michaelshof. Years later, a vision for a chapel took root.

Help came unexpectedly. H.W.F. Böckow bequeathed part of his fortune to the Gehlsdorf rescue house. This generous gift allowed the chapel dream to become reality. The foundation stone was laid in 1879. Just a year later, on June 27, 1880, the Kapelle Michaelshof was consecrated.

Imagine the original interior. Murals of “The Good Shepherd” and “Saint Michael” adorned the walls beside the altar. These images, however, were painted over in the 1950s. The 1970s brought more changes. Yellow industrial glass replaced the original windows. A ceiling of bast mats was installed beneath the beams.

But the Kapelle Michaelshof was destined for renewal. A complete renovation took place in 1999 and 2000. It was carefully overseen by historical preservationists. The new design was based on a color analysis. The window frames were painted a deep red. The glass was replaced with antique-style panes in alternating beige and vibrant red.

Step inside the Kapelle Michaelshof. Notice the old wooden pews. The altar and lectern are new additions from 2000. They are crafted from light wood. The walls and visible roof beams are painted in varying shades of taiga green.

Originally, the altar was in the small apse at the west end. Now, it stands at the east end, elevated by a step. This change in orientation marks a new chapter in the chapel’s history. A sound system ensures that everyone can hear services and events.

Look up to where a small bell tower once stood. Since the chapel’s completion, a roof turret held a small prayer bell. However, it was soon removed due to structural concerns. In the 1950s, a new bell hung in a metal frame near the Karstenhaus entrance. During the renovation, the roof turret was rebuilt true to the original design. A new bell tower was erected from oak beams.

Listen closely. The bell carries an important message. Its inscription reads: “Be doers of the word, and not hearers only.” These words from James 1:22 encapsulate the spirit of the Michaelshof.

The Kapelle Michaelshof has a history spanning over 130 years. It is more than just a building. It is a place for residents, students, staff, and guests. The Kapelle Michaelshof offers an atmosphere of tranquility and joy. The Kapelle Michaelshof remains a beacon of hope.
