The kapelica svetog Nikole holds a profound significance. It commemorates the sacrifices made during the fierce battles. These battles took place during the Croatian War of Independence. Sustjepan a small village outside Dubrovnik was a crucial defensive point. On December 6 1991 four defenders lost their lives. Many more were injured during a brutal attack.
The chapel’s construction is a story in itself. It was built on land donated by Ivo Becar a Croatian expatriate living in Peru. The idea came from Ivo Buratovic. The design is the work of Stijepo Butijer a Dubrovnik architect. Romana Milutin Fabris a Dubrovnik artist painted the image of Saint Nicholas above the altar.
The building of the kapelica svetog Nikole was a community effort. Roughly one million kuna was invested. Its blessing coincided with Saint Nicholas Day and the Day of Dubrovnik Defenders. The ceremony was attended by Dubrovnik’s mayor Dubravka Suica and veterans from December 1991.
