“Ad Veritatem Per Caritatem” echoes in the halls. That’s the motto of Regina Pacis School. Right here in Jakarta stands Kapel Regina Pacis. It stands as a testament to faith and dedication.
Regina Pacis means Queen of Peace in Latin. It refers to the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Kapel Regina Pacis is part of the Regina Pacis School Jakarta. The school itself has a rich history. It began in 1958 by the FMM sisters. These are the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary.
Initially, the school aimed to educate Chinese and foreign students. These students lived in Jakarta. It started with kindergarten, elementary, and junior high. Exclusively for girls at first.
Regina Pacis had two divisions. One used Mandarin as the language. The other was the Regina Pacis International School. It used English.
The kindergarten started on Jl. K. H. Agus Salim. Sister Felicite FMM was the first principal. In 1962, the kindergarten moved. It joined the elementary school on Jl. Budi Kemuliaan. Sister M. Ngantonina FMM led the elementary school. They faced many challenges then. Especially with facilities.
However, Regina Pacis remained dedicated to education in Indonesia. In August, the junior high began. It shared the same location. Sister M. Cheng Jowang Paseko FMM was the principal. The school building was a family home. In 1963 and 1964, there were only a few rooms. Two for 7th grade and one for 8th grade.
In 1965, kindergarten, elementary, and junior high moved again. This time to Jl. Palmerah Utara I. That same year, Regina Pacis High School started. Sister Elizabeth Tjahjana FMM initiated it. Parents wanted their children to finish high school. Resources were limited.
There was only one classroom. Twenty students sat on elementary school benches. Their classroom was a covered veranda. Teachers were few. In 1967, the high school moved to Jl. Budi Kemuliaan. The building was in disarray. It had been empty since 1965. The military had used it. Students sold snacks to raise money for school benches.
In 1968, the high school moved to Jl. Palmerah Utara I. It took over the Regina Pacis International School building. That school had to close. Now, there was a proper building and desks. Development began.
In 1968, Regina Pacis became one division. It used Indonesian as the language of instruction. Boys were admitted. Regina Pacis School Jakarta settled at Jl. Palmerah Utara 1. The Yayasan Adikara Niat foundation oversaw it. Sister Elizabeth Tjahjaya FMM led the foundation.
Regina Pacis Jakarta resulted from the hard work of teachers, students, and parents. They never gave up on quality education. From humble beginnings, Regina Pacis Jakarta has grown. It continues to improve education for future generations.
Today, Regina Pacis Jakarta offers a holistic education. The RECIS Curriculum combines the national curriculum and the Pearson Edexcel curriculum from the UK.
