In 2003, the Kantor Walikota Jakarta Selatan found its current home on Jalan Prapanca Raya. This modern, sixteen-story building, with its tile roof and brick walls, stands as a testament to the city’s growth. But the story of the Kantor Walikota Jakarta Selatan begins much earlier. Its first home, on Jalan Radio V, was built in 1964. Due to the political turmoil surrounding the G30S movement, the building wasn’t occupied until 1966. As Jakarta Selatan expanded, so did the need for more administrative space. In 1971, Governor Ali Sadikin laid the cornerstone for a new building on land previously used by the city’s Public Works Department. This building, a rectangular structure enclosing a central courtyard, was completed in 1972 at a cost of 160 million rupiah. Designed and built by Pembangunan Jaya, it marked a significant expansion for the Kantor Walikota Jakarta Selatan. Another addition followed in 1978. A seven-story brown building was added to the complex in 1987. However, even with these expansions, the Jalan Trunojoyo location eventually proved too small. By 2003, a new era began with the move to the current location on Jalan Prapanca Raya, near the Ade Irma Suryani Nasution Monument. Final additions to the Prapanca complex were finished in 2010. The old offices on Jalan Trunojoyo were later demolished and the land was gifted to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) for their new headquarters. The current mayor, Munjirin, has held the position since October 13, 2021. He oversees the ten districts of South Jakarta, navigating the contemporary culture and ever-growing needs of this vibrant part of the city. From a building delayed by political upheaval to a modern sixteen-story structure, the Kantor Walikota Jakarta Selatan has witnessed the evolving landscape of Jakarta.
