Built during the reign of Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror the Kantarcilar Mescidi stands as a testament to Istanbul’s rich history. This small mosque also known as the Sarı Timurcu Mosque has a fascinating story. Its name Kantarcilar meaning scale-makers refers to the guild whose artisans have worked in this neighborhood for centuries. The mosque’s foundation was laid by Sarı Timurcu Mevlana Muhittin Efendi in the 15th century.

The Kantarcilar Mescidi is more than just a place of worship. It’s a living archive of architectural styles and social history. It has undergone several renovations. Major restorations took place in 1848 and 1895. In 1967-68 a new facade was added. This facade which is made of brick and stone gives the mosque its current appearance.

The original structure boasts features that speak to its age. Its walls are constructed using two layers of brick and one layer of roughly hewn stone. Inside you will find two galleries. One is 3.35 meters wide and the other is 3.70 meters wide. These galleries demonstrate the mosque’s capacity to house a large congregation. Above the lower entrance gate an inscription reads Inne salate a verse from the Quran. This is a beautiful example of calligraphic art from the period.

Even the minbar the pulpit from which sermons are delivered adds to this mosque’s historical interest. It was installed in 1688 by Kadi-Zade Mehmet Efendi. This addition transformed the mescit a small mosque into a fully functional mosque. The founder Sarı Timurcu left a significant endowment. This endowment consisted of nineteen eighty shops. Their income was allocated for the mosque’s upkeep. The remaining revenue supported the Imam and Muezzin the caller to prayer.

Today the Kantarcilar Mescidi continues to serve its community. It hosts daily prayers with an average of one hundred attendees. On Fridays during Jummah prayers attendance swells to seven hundred and fifty. It is a place of peace and reflection a living link to the past. The mosque stands as a quiet reminder of Istanbul’s enduring religious heritage. This is a place where history faith and community intertwine. This is the story of the Kantarcilar Mescidi.
