Among them was Dubrovnik’s mayor, Niko Koprivica. A group of these accused individuals, as many as 53, were taken to Daksa. They were executed without trial, their bodies left where they fell. The island became a silent testament to this horrific act. Years passed, and the story of Daksa faded into whispers, the island shunned. Then, in 2009, a chilling discovery. Authorities unearthed the remains of six victims. The Daksa 1944/45 Association soon announced the discovery of a mass grave containing 48 bodies. The island’s tragic past resurfaced, demanding acknowledgment. Finally, in 2010, the remains were re-interred, offering a measure of peace to the victims and their families.
