In the heart of bustling Budapest, lies a hidden gem. A whisper of the past, the Kánai bencés kolostorrom. The Kánai bencés kolostorrom is more than just ruins. It’s a time capsule. It takes us back to a medieval village named Kána. This village thrived where Újbuda stands today. Imagine a bustling community. They built their homes, their ovens, their lives, right here. In the early 2000s, during the construction of the Újbuda-Tóváros Housing Estate, workers stumbled upon something extraordinary. They unearthed the remnants of Kána. This forgotten village was spread across 20-22 hectares. The excavation revealed almost 200 houses. There were 248 ovens and a cemetery with nearly 1100 graves. They also discovered ditches and, most importantly, the ruins of a later-built church, the Kánai bencés kolostorrom. Sadly, due to the housing development, most of Kána was reburied. Only the church ruins, the Kánai bencés kolostorrom, remained uncovered. Between 2006 and 2008, the site was developed to showcase these ruins. Today, we can explore them freely. Kána stands out among Hungary’s known Árpád-era villages. It’s the largest and most contiguous village remnant. Founded likely in the mid-12th century, Kána reached its peak in the 13th century. It probably belonged to Apa bán, a confidant of King Géza II. The Kánai bencés kolostorrom itself was built in two stages. The initial 12th-century structure was a modest 10×6 meter building. It featured a semicircular sanctuary apse and a 4.4×4.1 meter nave. Only fragments of this original structure survive. Around the turn of the 13th century, the church expanded westward by 7 meters. Archaeologists found two base elements, likely supports for a gallery. Traces of twin windows and a studded gate also emerged. The church received monument protection in 2004 during its excavation. A section of the wall was even reconstructed. Just a few meters from the Kánai bencés kolostorrom is Kána-tó, a small lake created by damming the Hosszúréti stream. The Kánai bencés kolostorrom’s cemetery held 1077 graves. They encircled the church in an oval shape, layered 2-3 levels deep. About 40% were lined with carved limestone. While lined graves existed elsewhere, such a large number is unique in Hungary. The 12th-13th century grave goods were simpler. It suggests that by then, only money intended for the afterlife was placed inside. However, items related to clothing were found: iron and bronze buckles, a bronze breastplate, silver rings, hair rings, a bronze pendant, and a bone cross. The nearby “Kána Monastery,” not to be confused with the Kánai bencés kolostorrom, originally housed an 11th-century church. This earlier church stood alongside a building for storing religious objects. The building was eventually demolished, and around the same time, the church became the burial place of the local noble family. The original church was rebuilt into a square, inner courtyard Benedictine monastery sometime in the 13th-14th century. The monastery underwent multiple reconstructions. Several abbots’ names from the 15th century are known. A fire destroyed the monastery at the end of that century. While rebuilt in the early 16th century, it was abandoned during the Ottoman occupation. The Kánai bencés kolostorrom and surrounding ruins, even in their fragmented state, tell a powerful story. It’s a story of faith, community, and the passage of time.
