Fifty years ago a generous donation built this. This is Kampsax Kollegiet. It stands proudly near the Technical University of Denmark. Its story began in 1967. The Kampmann Kierulff & Saxild A/S engineering firm celebrated its 50th anniversary. They gave 2 million kroner to build a dormitory. Kampsax Kollegiet was born.
Designed by Eva and Nils Koppel the building project started in May 1968. Think of it Each building block took around 14 days to build. The cornerstone ceremony was a big event. The rector and important figures laid the stones. By June 1969 most buildings were under a roof. The first students moved in August 1969. More followed until March 1970. The official opening was on June 22 1970. Paintings by Henry Heerup were unveiled. A special gift from Else Kampmann and others.
Kampsax Kollegiet has 521 small rooms. Each room is about 12 square meters. It includes a bathroom and toilet. The rooms are arranged around communal kitchens. There are 31 kitchens in total.
The Kollegiet wasn’t just about studying. There was a café. A cinema for movie nights. And plenty of games. Table football darts table tennis a volleyball court and a garden with a barbecue. It had a party basement too.
In 1994 Kampsax Kollegiet underwent renovations. New roofs new ventilation systems and repainted exteriors improved the place. It was ready for its 25th-anniversary reception. The Kollegiet added a computer network in 1995-96 and a phone system in 1997. A shared grill and seating areas followed in 2003. A major renovation began in 2022. Kampsax Kollegiet has been a home to generations of students. It continues to thrive today as a vibrant hub for learning and community. The spirit of innovation and collaboration lives on in the halls of Kampsax Kollegiet.
