Have you ever stepped inside a building that feels like a time machine? KAM Isaiah Israel Temple is one of those places, and it’s right here in Chicago. Officially dedicated in 1924, the Temple’s Byzantine Revival architecture whisks you back to the ancient world, evoking centuries-old synagogues in the Mediterranean. The grandeur of the building’s exterior starts with the towering octagonal shape. That is no coincidence, the architects took inspiration from the Basilica of San Vitale in Ravenna, Italy. KAM Isaiah Israel is the oldest Reform Jewish congregation in Chicago. In fact, it’s the culmination of two congregations, KAM (Kehilath Anshe Mayriv) and Isaiah Israel, which merged in 1971, after both having a colorful history and a string of former locations. KAM, founded in 1847, moved several times, first residing above a dry-goods store on Lake Street. They then built a small synagogue, which was destroyed twice by fire, once in 1871 during the Great Chicago Fire, and then again in 1874. In 1890, they moved into a magnificent building designed by famed architects Louis Sullivan and Dankmar Adler. It’s a testament to their time and is now the Pilgrim Baptist Church, the birthplace of gospel music. After that, they moved to Kenwood-Hyde Park in 1924 where the current building stands, designed by Alfred S. Alschuler. Today, the structure is a designated Chicago Landmark.
