Hidden beneath the surface of Kalvebod Fælled’s serene landscape lies a story of transformation. Kalvebod Fælled wasn’t always a haven for nature. Imagine this tranquil space as a booming artillery range. During World War II, the area was reclaimed from the seabed, not for peaceful purposes, but as a military training ground. For over four decades, from 1943 to 1984, the sounds of drills and the echo of artillery fire filled the air at Kalvebod Fælled. This area served as a crucial training ground for the Danish military. This military history is now a hidden layer beneath the vibrant ecosystem. After the military moved out in 1983, nature began to reclaim its territory. What was once a training ground slowly morphed into a diverse ecosystem. Today, Kalvebod Fælled is a testament to nature’s resilience. It’s a sprawling 2,000-hectare nature reserve, encompassing a variety of habitats, from young forests to tidal marshes. Kalvebod Fælled also holds a unique distinction. It’s home to Pinseskoven, Denmark’s largest birch forest. This forest sprung up naturally from seeds blown over from Sweden, a silent testament to nature’s ability to connect and regenerate. Here at Kalvebod Fælled, you can wander through diverse landscapes, from open grasslands to dense woodland. Part of Kalvebod Fælled, however, remains off-limits. A southwestern section is a protected bird sanctuary under the Natura 2000 scheme. This sanctuary provides a safe haven for numerous bird species, some of which are rare or endangered. Kalvebod Fælled finally opened fully to the public on October 15, 2010, after a meticulous clearing of unexploded munitions, remnants of its military past. Today, this area stands as a symbol of rebirth. It’s a place where the echoes of the past mingle with the quiet whispers of nature, creating a unique and captivating experience.
