Have you heard the story of Denmark’s only organic agricultural school? It’s right here in front of you, Kalø Økologisk Landbrugsskole, a place where the future of organic farming is being cultivated. This school, nestled in the heart of nature, was founded in 1897 and is known for its focus on practical skills and sustainable practices. It began as a small school in Lyngby on Djursland, but it has since evolved, eventually merging with Den Økologiske Jordbrugsskole in 2003, forever changing its destiny. It also happens to be the only organic agricultural school in Denmark, offering its courses in English! In 2014, Kalø Økologisk Landbrugsskole merged with Viden Djurs, making it even more unique and important for the region. Kalø Økologisk Landbrugsskole has about 80 to 100 students and 20 employees, all passionate about organic agriculture. The school farm is an integral part of the curriculum, with 50 hectares of organically cultivated land, greenhouses, machinery, and facilities for raising pigs, sheep, dairy cows, and steers. This is a place where the theory is put into practice, and the skills acquired are as important as the knowledge gained. They even have their own farm shop where you can sample the organic produce directly from their farm. Today, Kalø Økologisk Landbrugsskole plays a crucial role in educating the next generation of conscious farmers, leading the way in the sustainable future of agriculture.
